At least one undersea cable connecting Sweden and Latvia was damaged on the 26th, prompting Latvia to immediately deploy warships to the affected sea area.
In recent weeks, there have been multiple incidents targeting undersea communication cables and energy facilities in the Baltic Sea.
The latest incident occurred on the morning of the 26th when a fiber optic cable connecting the Latvian National Radio and Television Center with Gotland Island and the Latvian city of Ventspils was "severely" damaged.
The Latvian authorities immediately dispatched a warship to the site and discovered a "suspicious vessel," the "Michalis San," along with two other vessels in the area.
Latvian Navy Commander Bolenz stated at a press conference: "We have a warship patrolling the Baltic Sea day and night, allowing us to be swiftly deployed upon discovering damage."
According to maritime monitoring websites, the "Michalis San" is en route to Russia.
Latvian officials indicated that the damage occurred in Swedish territorial waters, with a water depth of at least 50 meters.
Meanwhile, the Swedish prosecutor announced the detention of vessels related to the "severe damage" of the cable.
