(Sishi, 15th) The Xiamen Xiang'an Folk Opera School Troupe from Fujian Province, China, staged the eighth deity-thanking opera performance at Tengyun Temple the night before last, continuing to add excitement and festive atmosphere to days of celebration activities.
Deputy Chairman of Tengyun Temple, Cheng Yongnian, specially took the stage at the invitation of the troupe, adding a highlight to the evening’s Gezai Opera, “Brothers, the Twin Magistrates.”
In the play, Cheng Yongnian played a Taoist priest entrusted with the mission of exorcising demons and expelling evil. With a calm aura, expressive eyes, and precise stage movement, he portrayed the character vividly, successfully creating an image of a highly skilled and righteous Taoist priest.
Cheng Yongnian’s every movement displayed solid skills, his stage presence was steady, and his expression was focused, fully demonstrating his love and respect for traditional opera art. His natural and smooth performance, coupled with a heartfelt portrayal, won rounds of applause and cheers from the audience, creating a lively atmosphere at the venue.
Cheng Yongnian expressed that he felt extremely honored and delighted to be invited to perform on the same stage as the troupe from Xiamen. Not only was it a rare opportunity for artistic exchange, but it also allowed him to relive his fond memories of serving as an actor at Tengyun Temple.
He hopes there will be more such cultural exchange activities in the future, allowing local audiences to appreciate the charm of traditional Chinese opera up close, while also contributing to the promotion of folk art exchange and heritage between the two regions.
Cheng Yongnian joined the Brunei Qunsheng Children’s Min Opera Troupe in the 1970s, becoming a member of the group. At that time, the troupe was the only children's Min Opera troupe in Southeast Asia, holding significant historical and artistic value.
Members of the troupe had been invited multiple times during those years to perform in Malaysia, Singapore, Little Kinmen, and Kinmen, where they always received enthusiastic responses, successfully spreading the art of Min Opera overseas. Afterwards, Cheng Yongnian continued his involvement in the arts by joining the Qunsheng Music Society, maintaining his passion and commitment to performing arts.
Those present last night to enjoy the performance included Tengyun Temple Chairman Li Yongzhen, Acting Chairman Cheng Yongming, Deputy Chairman Lin Dencai, Deputy Chairman Ye Tianfu, Deputy Chairman Lin Renwei, as well as board members and devotees.
