(Kuching, 13th) Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari stated that Sarawak aims to achieve a clean energy capacity of 10 gigawatts (GW) by 2030, and 15 gigawatts by 2035.
He said this aligns with the goals of enhancing energy security, industrial growth, and a prosperous future for all Sarawak people.
Sarawak is intensifying efforts to secure funding for transformative energy projects. This year, we will work with international financial institutions and global partners, leveraging green funds and strategic partnerships to propel Sarawak towards a cleaner and more resilient future.
Speaking at an event at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching, he emphasized that Sarawak is not only participating in energy transition but also shaping it.
Of course, he stated that Sarawak is also committed to advancing development without damaging the environment.
He said Sarawak's climate change measures are built on actionable steps that promote long-term resilience.
He noted that Sarawak launched a RM2 billion, 500-megawatt hydrogen combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) facility in Miri last month, which is expected to be completed in 2027.
He said the plant would enhance the power supply in northern Sarawak and potentially serve neighboring Sabah and Brunei, using a mixture of methane and hydrogen to reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency.
Additionally, Abang Johari mentioned witnessing the world's first large-scale hydrogen-powered gas turbine during a visit to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' Takasago Hydrogen Park in Japan. This breakthrough technology will be integrated into Sarawak's CCGT facility, strengthening the state's leadership in low-carbon energy transition.
The Sarawak Gas Roadmap (SGR) has accelerated this momentum by establishing an energy ecosystem that has increased natural gas supply throughout Sarawak to support industrial growth, household use, and economic prosperity.
He said it outlines a transformative future for the state's energy landscape. As part of this vision, new gas terminals will facilitate efficient distribution benefiting households and industries, similar to the advantages already enjoyed by Miri residents. This expansion supports Sarawak's growing energy demand.
Therefore, he said Sarawak must have full control over its gas supply and distribution, stressing that this autonomy is key to implementing plans that maximize the benefits of natural gas for Sarawakians.
Regarding the economy, Abang Johari stated that the private sector is the driving force behind Sarawak's thriving economy.
Entrepreneurs, businesses, SMEs, and investors are the catalysts of our economy, shaping Sarawak into a center of progress and prosperity.
The Premier stated that for Sarawak to continue to develop, the private sector needs to continue to take a leading role, as his government is committed to creating an environment where creativity, investment, and innovation can flourish.
Through our strong policies, supported by efficient logistics, energy, and digital infrastructure, we are laying the foundation for your expansion, investment, and success, while nurturing a technically skilled and adaptable workforce to meet industrial demands.
He acknowledged that if the public and private sectors work hand in hand, he believes nothing is impossible.
I see a future full of hope, and with the involvement of the private sector, we will unlock the full potential of Sarawak. Together, we can cultivate a resilient, diversified economy capable of seizing future opportunities.
