Indonesian Man and Woman Sentenced to Jail and Caning

(Bandar Seri Begawan, 29th) An Indonesian woman recently pleaded guilty in court to three charges, including violating Chapter 146, Section 12(1)(g) of the Passports Act, namely possessing another person’s passport without authorization, which carries a penalty of six months’ imprisonment; and violating Chapter 22, Section 109 and Section 466(b) and 466(c) of the Penal Code, each carrying a penalty of eight months’ imprisonment.

In the end, the defendant, Rukmiyati (45), was sentenced to a total of 22 months’ imprisonment, with the sentence taking effect from the date of her arrest on June 5th. She was arrested during an operation by enforcement officers of the Immigration and National Registration Department at a commercial premise and was subsequently brought to court to stand trial.

In another case, an Indonesian man, Muhammad Kanif (46), was found guilty of overstaying after his immigration pass expired, violating Chapter 17, Section 15(1) of the Immigration Act. Upon pleading guilty, he was sentenced to seven months’ imprisonment and three strokes of the cane. The sentence takes effect from September 17th.
