It has been reported online that the Hongqi Grand Bridge at Shuangjiangkou Hydropower Station in Maerkang City, Aba Prefecture, Sichuan Province, China, collapsed on the 11th. Officials stated that a landslide caused slope cracks, and traffic control had been implemented one day in advance, so there were no casualties. Videos circulating online showed the bridge deck falling into the Zumuzu River below, raising a huge cloud of dust.

● Traffic Control Implemented, No Casualties

According to "Jimu News," on November 10, traffic control was imposed on the bridge by local authorities. The "Safe Maerkang" public WeChat account reported: "Cracks appeared on the road surface and slope at kilometer marker K381+030M on the right bank at the Hongqi Bridge of Shuangjiangkou, Maerkang City along National Highway 317, posing a safety hazard. To ensure the safe passage of vehicles and pedestrians, temporary traffic control was implemented from November 10 at the Hongqi Bridge section of National Highway 317 in Maerkang City, with the end date to be determined."

According to staff from Aba Prefecture's Transportation Bureau, the Hongqi Bridge is located in the reservoir area of the Shuangjiangkou Hydropower Station. On November 10, during patrols, staff discovered cracks and hazards on the pavement and slope at the bridge approach, and immediately implemented traffic control. Around 4 p.m. on the 11th, the bridge collapsed, but there were no casualties.

Initial assessment suggests that the hazard was caused by a landslide on the nearby mountain; relevant experts have arrived at the scene and follow-up work is underway.

● Completed Only in January This Year

According to the official website of Sichuan Expressway Construction & Development Group Co., Ltd., the Hongqi Grand Bridge was successfully joined together on January 14, 2025.

The Hongqi Grand Bridge is located in Baiwan Township, Maerkang City, Aba Prefecture. Shaped like a "Y," it stretches across the eastern source of the Dadu River, tightly connecting the transportation of Maerkang, Jinchuan County, and Rangtang County, reshaping the regional transportation network. The bridge has a total length of 758 meters. The main bridge adopts a three-span, one-section prestressed concrete continuous rigid-frame design, with a main span of 220 meters and the main pier reaching as high as 172 meters, making it a so-called "bridge in the clouds."
