Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid emphasized that any issue involving religion must be handled cautiously to avoid causing sensitivities. Therefore, all parties need to view the 'halal ham and cheese sandwich' incident rationally to prevent further controversy.

Zahid, who is also the Chairman of the National Halal Council, responded this way when asked about the issue on Sunday (January 19th) after attending a Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW) event in Telok Panglima Garang.

He stated that the event should not be overly exaggerated, and the retailer involved has taken appropriate measures, demonstrating a responsible attitude.

'Once the University of Malaya (UM) found out about the issue, they immediately closed the two retail stores on campus selling the ham sandwiches, which is a positive action.'

He added that he has closely worked with the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) to suggest ways to handle this matter.

'This incident serves as an important lesson and is left to JAKIM, the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs, and the police for further investigation and handling.'
