(Kuching, 16th) Malaysia is taking proactive measures to further strengthen regional ASEAN energy cooperation by improving the ASEAN Power Grid Memorandum of Understanding.
Deputy Prime Minister Dato Amar Fadillah Yusof stated that Malaysia has already established shared electricity networks with Thailand, Singapore, and Laos. In the field of commercial energy cooperation, Malaysia has also reached relevant agreements with Vietnam, as well as between Sarawak and Singapore.
He emphasized that the construction of the power grid is crucial for realizing inter-state and cross-border electricity transactions, including the trading of renewable energy.
"We need to upgrade our grid system so that all renewable energy can be integrated into the grid. In Sarawak, we also need to enhance the grid in order to begin selling this energy."
Fadillah Yusof, who is also the Minister of Energy and Water Transformation, made these remarks in an interview with reporters after attending the “Malaysian Cultural Heritage Night: 2025 YSS-ASEAN Volunteer Student Service Program to Sarawak” event last night.
He further pointed out that, using the same concepts and mechanisms, this power grid system can be extended to other ASEAN countries, including the "Borneo Grid" plan, which would connect Sarawak with Kalimantan, Brunei, Sabah, and possibly even the Philippines in the future.
"We will further refine concrete mechanisms, but there are already successful cases in existence, namely the cooperation among Laos, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore. This concept can be extended to other ASEAN member countries."
Earlier, Dato Amar Fadillah Yusof also called on ASEAN member countries to continuously strengthen cooperation in the energy and economic fields in his speech, jointly promoting regional development and making Southeast Asia one of the world's wealthiest regions.
