33 Years Since Wong Ka Kui’s Passing: Former Lovers Appear in Documentary

黄家驹已逝世33年。
The iconic soul of Hong Kong legendary band “Beyond,” Wong Ka Kui, accidentally fell from the stage while recording a show in Tokyo, Japan, in 1993, and unfortunately passed away after rescue efforts on June 30 of the same year. June 30 marks the 33rd anniversary of his passing, and as scheduled, Wong Kwan Chung and Yip Sai Wing posted tributes at midnight. Wong Kwan Chung wrote emotionally that although the memories are as painful as knife cuts, their youth has already been frozen in time, and Wong Ka Kui truly lives on in everyone’s hearts; Yip Sai Wing simply expressed endless longing for his dear friend with four words: “Forever Remembered.”

To commemorate Wong Ka Kui, the first documentary about him, Truly Met, co-produced by Yip Sai Wing and former Beyond manager Chan Kin Tim, was recently released. This 129-minute film not only includes over 30 minutes of concert footage, but also features rare, never-before-seen music and video. The crew traveled across six cities—Hong Kong, Beijing, Taipei, Tokyo, Toronto, and London—interviewing over 20 different period members, staff, and friends.

Notably, while Wong Ka Keung and Wong Kwan Chung did not participate in interviews, Wong Ka Kui’s two former girlfriends, Pan Sin Lai and Lam Chor Kei, both appeared in the film. As the only girlfriend Wong Ka Kui publicly acknowledged while alive, Lam Chor Kei, who had previously strained relations with Wong’s family for wanting to attend the funeral as a “widow,” was publicly criticized by Wong Ka Keung for allegedly seeking publicity. In the documentary, Lam Chor Kei clarified that she has left the entertainment industry for many years and does not need to seek attention through this, and admitted it took her more than 10 years to recover from the grief, saying frankly, “In my heart, Ka Kui and I were already husband and wife.”
