Famed Chinese singer and philanthropist Han Hong recently sparked a wave of online controversy due to her comment "zou ge mian'r" (“give us some support”) while promoting director Feng Xiaogang’s new film “Zhua Te Wu” (“Catching Spies”). This was followed by widespread online rumors of a screenshot claiming Han Hong had admitted to being "in tears" and supposedly announced her "withdrawal from the charity sector,” once again putting her at the center of a public storm. However, the Beijing Han Hong Love Charity Foundation urgently clarified on June 30 that they had not received any notice of her resignation, and that Han Hong herself was still on the frontlines in Inner Mongolia participating in volunteer medical consultations, debunking the rumors.
(Beijing, 1st)—The incident began at the premiere of “Zhua Te Wu”, where Han Hong, serving as the film’s music producer, addressed the audience in a strong Beijing accent: “Our brothers and sisters from Beijing... can you support us? Give us some face and help us hit the first wave of box office sales!” In Beijing dialect, “zou ge mian’r” means to show support or give face. However, after the footage circulated, many netizens questioned whether Han Hong, as a socially influential charity figure, was using her charity image to promote a commercial film and calling on the public to support the movie out of a sense of personal obligation. Some accused her of using “emotional blackmail.”
The controversy escalated on the evening of June 29, when a screenshot claiming to be from Han Hong’s social media began circulating online. In it, she apologized for her offhand remarks, said she was “moved to tears,” and, most shockingly, declared, “From today, I am withdrawing from the charity sector.” This screenshot was subsequently reposted by CCTV host Zhang Zequn, who called for public understanding, but Zhang soon deleted his post and refused to respond to media inquiries, leaving the situation rather unclear.
In response, the Beijing Han Hong Love Charity Foundation on June 30 clarified that they had not received any notice from Han Hong regarding her resignation. Staff disclosed that Han Hong is currently leading a team in Inner Mongolia as part of the “2026 Hundred-Person Aid Mongolia” large-scale medical aid campaign, and all volunteer medical consultations are proceeding as normal. They urged the public not to believe online rumors. #
