(U.S. 11th) U.S. President Trump said that Los Angeles, which has been experiencing ongoing protests recently, is being invaded by 'foreign enemies,' and he vowed to 'liberate' the city.
According to AFP reports, Trump gave a speech on Tuesday (June 10th) at the Fort Bragg military base in North Carolina. He referred to the protesters in Los Angeles, California as 'animals,' accusing them of waving flags of other countries. He also urged soldiers to boo and mock California Governor Newsom and former President Biden.
The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) conducted operations in multiple locations in Los Angeles last week, arresting dozens of immigrants, which led to days of protests. The protesters opposed the authorities’ tough enforcement and clashed with security personnel multiple times. Trump has ordered the deployment of 2,000 soldiers to Los Angeles, including 700 active-duty Marines.
According to military officials, Marine Corps members do not have arrest powers and are responsible for protecting federal property and personnel; approximately 2,100 National Guard members were in the Los Angeles area on Tuesday, with more troops on the way.
Trump stated at Fort Bragg: “This anarchy absolutely cannot continue. We will never allow federal law enforcement officers to be attacked, nor will we allow American cities to be invaded and occupied by foreign enemies.”
He told the military personnel at Fort Bragg: “What you are witnessing in California is a full-scale assault on peace, public order, and national sovereignty, carried out by mobs waving foreign flags with the aim of continuing the foreign invasion of our country.”
Newsom strongly opposed Trump's troop deployment to Los Angeles, criticizing Trump's authoritarianism. On Monday (9th), California sued Trump and the U.S. Department of Defense, seeking to prevent the federal troop deployment, and then sought an immediate ruling on federal troops participating in police enforcement on Tuesday. A hearing on the matter is expected to take place on Thursday (12th).
Trump equated the Los Angeles protesters with uncontrolled immigrants and stated that Europe must also take action.
“As the whole world can see now, uncontrolled immigration causes chaos, incapacity, and disorder. You know what? Europe has the same problem; many European countries are experiencing these issues. They had better act before it’s too late.”
