(Miri, 9th) The Telang Usan Assemblyman, Dato Dennis Ngau, urges community leaders and village chiefs to prioritize integrity, diligently fulfill their duties, and work closely with the government to jointly advance local development.

He mentioned this in his speech at the letter of appointment ceremony held at the Miri Division office on Tuesday, stating that the newly appointed leaders were selected based on their virtues and talents, as well as strictly adhering to the traditional customs of the Kenyah and Kayan people.

“They have been screened through a series of selections, including recommendations from a council of elders, which consists of advisors known as 'Temenggong' and 'Pemanca'. Therefore, they must lead the community with honesty and responsibility.”

Dennis also emphasized that the appointment of leaders among the Kenyah and Kayan people still respects traditional practices, which usually involve choosing from family members of 'Paran' or 'Maren' (higher social strata of the tribe).

On the other hand, Baram MP Dato Anyi Ngau urged former leaders who were not reappointed to continue supporting their successors. He stated that only by maintaining unity and cooperation can village administrative work be carried out more systematically and efficiently.

On that day, a total of 13 community leaders and village chiefs from the Telang Usan constituency were awarded their letters of appointment and officially took office.

The attendees also included Miri District Officer Azizul Uda, Sarawak Premier Political Secretary Dominic Nyurang Ajang, Kenyah Chief Temenggong Joseph Orien, and Kayan Chief Temenggong Elizabeth Deng.
