Defendants in Miri Camp Murder Case Await Further Charges, Trial Adjourned to May 30

(Miri, 9th) Two soldiers accused of murdering a comrade at the Sri Miri military camp were charged today at the Miri Magistrates' Court. The case is scheduled to be mentioned again on May 30, pending further reports.

23-year-old Muhammad Afiq Syarim (from Baling, Kedah) and 21-year-old Mohamad Faies Khuzaimah (from Tumpat, Kelantan) appeared before Magistrate Ashok Linggam. After hearing the charges, both nodded to indicate their understanding.

The prosecutor was Deputy Public Prosecutor Franklin Ganggan Bennet, who informed the court that the case is still awaiting several key reports, including the autopsy report, chemical analysis report, and official directions from the Deputy Public Prosecutor's office.

Both defendants are represented by lawyer Ranbir Singh Sangha.

They are charged under Section 302 (murder) and Section 34 (common intention) of the Penal Code with the joint murder of a comrade. If found guilty, they could face the death penalty, or imprisonment for not less than 30 years and not more than 40 years. If not sentenced to death, they also face not less than 12 strokes of the cane.

According to the charges, the incident occurred between 2:15 am and 3:05 am on March 24, 2025, at room 8-G-03 of Block B, Single Soldiers' Quarters, Company Alpha 20th Battalion, Malaysian Army, Sri Miri Camp.

The two defendants are accused of causing the death of Muhammad Muqriz Aseri.

The authorities are currently investigating the motive and relevant details of the case. The two defendants remain in custody, awaiting the next court mention.
