Namewee has become embroiled in the suspicious death of Taiwanese internet celebrity "Nursing Department Goddess" Hsieh Yu-hsin. Last month, Hsieh was found dead in a hotel room in Malaysia, and Namewee was present at the scene. Police recovered drugs and aphrodisiacs at the scene, and preliminary urine tests showed Namewee tested positive for four types of drugs. He was charged on the 24th of last month in Kuala Lumpur’s First Criminal Magistrate’s Court with drug use and possession. Ironicly, 11 years ago, he used Jaycee Chan’s marijuana incident to declare two strong "reasons for not taking drugs," asserting, "If you’re capable of taking drugs, what’s the point of making music!"
On August 12, 2014, Jackie Chan’s son Jaycee Chan was arrested in Beijing for smoking marijuana. On August 19, Namewee posted a photo with Jaycee Chan, revealing that a young singer had once asked him: he heard drugs give inspiration for music and wondered, "Your songs are great – did you use drugs when making music?" Namewee responded with two points. First, he said making music requires energy and careful thought – researching, considering musical arrangements and instruments, and dedicating himself to every step of recording, mixing, and production, with none of it to be taken lightly. "All this needs a clear mind and plenty of energy – it’s impossible for someone on drugs!"
Second, he said musicians often make the most moving and powerful music when impoverished, struggling, or desperate to prove themselves: "Drugs? Drugs are too expensive—they’re for rich people! If you’re capable of affording drugs, what’s the point of making music!?"
Back then, some netizens criticized him for using Jaycee Chan for hype: “Stepping on others to get ahead, and even posting a photo of his dad inviting you to the birthday party just to mock him,” “Drug King Namewee! Be careful, your words might come back to haunt you,” “Don’t praise yourself by stepping on someone else’s misfortune.” Namewee responded confidently: “The ones hiding drugs and taking drugs get sympathy, while the anti-drug ones get questioned. A well-meant attempt at an educational opportunity is called hype. Why did I spark public outrage? What did I do wrong? My biggest mistake is I never thought about how to market myself for more likes, do what everyone expects me to, stay positive for appearances while being a mess in private—which apparently is fine… but ok! At least I get to be myself and I’m happy with that! As for any misunderstandings or dissatisfaction people have with me, let time prove everything. I only seek a clear conscience.” Now, tables have turned and he’s the one accused of drug use. He has denied the charges, and the trial is scheduled for December 18.
