An 18-year-old Chinese national has been charged in court for allegedly assaulting blogger Amos Yee outside a Singapore anime expo and causing public nuisance.

According to Lianhe Zaobao, the Chinese defendant Qin Haowang (aged 18, transliteration) appeared via video link in the State Courts on the 11th, charged with one count of voluntarily causing hurt and one count of public nuisance.

Charging documents state that the defendant allegedly shouted at and physically assaulted Amos Yee—punching and kicking him—at around 2:10pm on May 9, 2026, on the 4th floor of Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre, causing public nuisance.

After being charged, the defendant was granted bail of S$5,000, and the case was adjourned to June 2.

If found guilty of voluntarily causing hurt, the defendant can be sentenced to up to three years in jail, fined up to S$5,000, or both. If convicted of public nuisance, the maximum penalty is a fine of S$2,000, up to three months' imprisonment, or both.

According to earlier reports, a “2026 Doujin Expo” anime exhibition was held at the Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre on May 9 and 10.

On May 8, Amos Yee announced on social media that he would attend the expo. Many netizens expressed dissatisfaction, arguing that the expo had many children, and that Yee—who has previous sex crime convictions—should not be allowed entry.

After receiving feedback, the expo organizer canceled Yee’s entry ticket and barred him from entering, but Yee still showed up at the venue that day.

During his time in the United States, Amos Yee was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment in December 2021 for possessing child pornography and soliciting underage girls. After being released, he was deported from the U.S., and was arrested by Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower at Changi Airport on March 20 this year. He was subsequently charged with three counts of violating the Enlistment Act. His case is set for a pre-trial conference on May 22.
