The flood situation in Hat Yai, southern Thailand, has further worsened. Forty seniors from Pontian, Johor's Senior Citizens Club remain stranded at a local hotel, waiting for rescue. Some group members have already run out of medications, such as those for high blood pressure and heart conditions, making the situation critical.
The group’s representative, Sayati (54), said that some members with chronic illnesses had already exhausted their supply of common medications for high blood pressure and heart conditions.
She said that so far, there has been no action from the consulate or the Thai government, and they have been informed that the evacuation process may take some time.
"The lack of electricity and phone networks makes it difficult for us to communicate with the outside world or seek urgent help."
Urging Consulate for Swift Evacuation
Another stranded person, Baharo (63), called on the consulate to help evacuate these seniors waiting for assistance as soon as possible, stating, "We really are in great need of help."
He also expressed gratitude to the hotel management for providing accommodation and food during this time, as well as using a generator to supply about 20 minutes of electricity, helping the disaster victims hold on while awaiting official rescue.
Unable to Leave Hotel, Water Level Remains High
On the other hand, Baharin, general manager of Cuti-Cuti Langkawi Private Limited, said that he and his 10 staff members still cannot leave the hotel as water levels remain very high.
On Monday (24th), through a WhatsApp group, he told the media that rescue operations have been slow, and so far, there has been no sign of any official rescue boats deployed by the local rescue team to assist victims.
He also said that what makes the situation even more worrying is that power has been out since Sunday, and most of the areas around the hotel have already been flooded.
