(Kuching, 5th) The Sarawak government will review existing agreements between Sarawak Water Sdn Bhd and external entities concerning the sale of treated water, to ensure that the supply for local users is not affected.
Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi, Sarawak Minister for Utilities and Telecommunication, emphasized that the Sarawak government always places local demand as its top priority in managing the state’s overall water affairs.
According to a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS), Julaihi stated that he had instructed Sarawak Water Sdn Bhd to reassess the current potable water sales agreements with third parties, in order to protect the security and stability of local water supply.
“I understand that, in the past, there were indeed water sales agreements entered into by the Sibu Water Board (now known as Sarawak Water Sdn Bhd) with certain entities, but I have requested that these matters be reviewed.
Our foremost task remains serving the local consumers.” He said this yesterday during his speech at the 2025 Integrity Day celebration of the Sarawak Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB).
He also warned that illegal water extraction is an unlawful act and is seen as one of the reasons for unstable water pressure in certain areas.
