(Seoul, 13th) – The Kuching headquarters of the Regional Islamic Da’wah Council of Southeast Asia and the Pacific (RISEAP) is expected to be fully completed and put into operation in January next year.
The council’s vice-chairman and Sarawak Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Coordination of Regional Development Agencies, Kuching North City Hall and Islamic Affairs), Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, revealed that the building, located on Jalan Budaya and provided by the Sarawak government, is currently undergoing restoration and renovation works.
He said: “The Sarawak government has provided an old building, with a history of over 90 years, located on Jalan Budaya, and renovation works have been ongoing for the past eight months.
It is expected to be completed in January next year, after which it will serve as RISEAP's headquarters in Kuching.”
Abdul Rahman said this during an interview after attending the 36th RISEAP Executive Committee Meeting in South Korea.
He added that once the works are completed, all RISEAP activities will be held in this building.
“A highlight of this building is that 24 flagpoles will be erected at the front, symbolizing RISEAP’s 24 member countries. This is not only commemorative, but will also become a new attraction for the public and tourists.”
As for Timor-Leste joining RISEAP, Abdul Rahman said that the topic was not discussed in detail at this meeting.
“The Secretary-General did mention the matter, but it was not discussed in depth. It may still be at the negotiation stage. Perhaps at the next meeting, the council will receive an official written application from Timor-Leste.”
