KUCHING: Over 500 university students from Sabah currently studying in Sarawak gathered for the inaugural Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) Townhall, held yesterday (July 11) at the Riverside Majestic Hotel.

The event was officiated by Sabah Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ellron Alfred Angin.

Speaking to reporters, Alfred described the townhall as the first of its kind, providing a crucial platform for student voices to be heard.

“This is the first time we’re holding a forum like this. Previously, there were no such sessions.

“From the aspirations shared with us earlier, it’s clear that these students are aware that every government has its strengths and weaknesses. I hope they understand the issues they’ve raised, and we, on behalf of the government, want to work together with them to improve the situation.

“They are also encouraged to offer suggestions that can benefit not only the state of Sabah, but also youth and students themselves. That way, we can overcome challenges together,” he said when met at the sidelines.

Participants included students from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Sarawak, as well as members of the Kadazandusun Cultural Association (KDCA) Sarawak Youth Committee.

A key highlight of the event was an interactive Q&A forum, where students posed thoughtful questions to the minister on topics such as job opportunities in Sabah, youth involvement in development, and support for students studying out of state.

The event also featured a vibrant cultural performance, with Sabahan students from KDCA showcasing Sabahan songs, highlighting their pride in preserving and celebrating Sabah’s rich heritage.
