The 33-year-old Chinese student who was inexplicably attacked by a group of minors in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, is now out of life-threatening danger and in stable condition.
The Chinese Consulate-General in Melbourne, Australia confirmed this news on Sunday (August 10).
In an announcement, the Consulate stated that the assaulted student will still need to undergo reconstructive surgery and a concussion examination and treatment next week. His physical condition remains very weak, and he needs to rest.
The announcement said that Felix Ellis, head of Tasmania’s Police, Fire and Emergency Management Department, called this violent incident shameful and absolutely intolerable in the community. The perpetrators have all been arrested and are currently on bail pending further legal proceedings as per state law.
The incident occurred on the 6th in Hobart. The Chinese student was at a shopping center to pick up his wife from work when several boys threw trash at him. When he warned them, he was immediately surrounded. As he tried to leave, he was assaulted in the head by multiple youths.
After the incident, the Consulate promptly extended their condolences to the assaulted student. In response to a recent series of attacks on Chinese citizens in Tasmania, the Consulate has contacted the state government and police, urging strict punishment for the perpetrators and effective measures to protect the safety of Chinese citizens.
