(Silek 22nd) An 89-year-old man mistakenly shot and killed a woman, thinking she was a squirrel while hunting behind his house. As the shotgun used was unlicensed, he pleaded guilty at the Magistrate's Court today and was fined a total sum of RM6,000.
Mangkok Mawa, from Tamakan, pleaded guilty to two charges before Magistrate Nur Syaihanaz Wa Lajari today.
The first charge accused him of firing his gun after mistaking movement in the forest for a squirrel, which resulted in the death of 52-year-old Corina Dina. This act violated Section 304A of the Penal Code (causing death by negligence or reckless act). The court sentenced him to a fine of RM4,000, or 5 months imprisonment in default.
The second charge was brought under Section 8(a) of the Firearms Act, for using an unlicensed shotgun (belonging to his son), for which he was fined RM2,000, or 3 months in prison if he fails to pay.
The incident took place at around 10am on July 23rd, in a village in Tamakan.
According to case details, police received a report from villagers that a woman had been shot. An investigation confirmed that the victim died from gunshot wounds to her arm and chest, as verified by a forensic report.
Police subsequently arrested the accused on the same day and seized the shotgun involved, ammunition, and related items.
The case was prosecuted by Deputy Prosecutor Chua Kai Sheng, while the accused was unrepresented by a lawyer.
