(Kuching, 22nd) A private company manager in Kuching, around 40 years old, lost over RM120,000 after falling for an online scam by believing a car advertisement on social media.
Sarawak Police Chief Datuk Mancha Ata pointed out that the incident occurred earlier this month when the victim was browsing social media at home and saw a car sale advertisement.
“He clicked on the link in the advertisement and subsequently contacted a person claiming to be an agent of Y and B Expert Sdn Bhd via WhatsApp.” Mancha said in a statement yesterday.
Trusting the scammer’s words, the victim transferred money several times to the bank account provided by the other party, with a total amount of about RM120,000.
“When the scammer kept requesting him to pay additional fees to process the car purchase paperwork, the victim realized he had been deceived. Up until he reported the incident to police, the victim still had not received the car.” he added.
The police reminded the public not to be easily fooled by so-called ‘low-priced products’ advertisements on social media.
“The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) urges citizens to always verify carefully before making any online transaction.” Mancha said.
