A tornado struck Hubei, with witnesses seeing their parents swept hundreds of meters into the sky, tragically losing their lives.

On the evening of July 6, multiple areas in eastern Hubei were hit by severe convective weather. Thunderstorms and gale winds occurred in Huangshi, Huanggang, Ezhou, Xianning, and other places. Wind speeds in 53 towns reached levels 8 to 13, with two towns reaching level 13. Tornadoes appeared in some towns. As of the morning of July 7, the disaster affected 14,600 people in Hubei Province, causing 11 deaths and 1 missing person.

Between 8:10 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on July 6, a historically rare EF2 tornado struck downtown Huanggang, with maximum wind speeds exceeding level 15. The violent wind swept through main and secondary roads, residential neighborhoods, and industrial parks in Huanggang City.

In the Changjiang Community of Huanggang City, Mr. Wu, the head of a logistics park enterprise, saw his parents swept up to hundreds of meters in the air!

Mr. Wu told China News Weekly that his parents unfortunately perished in the disaster. When the tornado struck, Mr. Wu was at the park entrance seeing someone off. He witnessed his parents, who were sitting in the yard relaxing, being swept up to hundreds of meters into the air and then falling. In the early hours of the 7th, after 2 a.m., they found his father's body. At noon, around 12 p.m., his mother's body was also found.

Fu Shenming, a researcher at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, stated that tornadoes "form and dissipate quickly and have extremely small temporal and spatial scales," and that accurate forecasts remain a global challenge. After this "extremely rare" tornado disaster, he suggested that localities should consider raising the wind resistance standards for new and existing buildings, especially strengthening risk assessment for extreme weather like tornadoes, which is also an important consideration for urban disaster prevention and mitigation in the future.
