Chinese internet-famous economist Gao Shanwen passed away from illness on July 7, at the age of 55.
Gao Shanwen was an internet-famous economist who once pointed out that China's official economic data overestimated the GDP growth rate and underestimated the number of unemployed people.
Gao Shanwen held a Bachelor of Science and a Master's in Economics from Peking University, and a PhD from the Graduate School of the People's Bank of China. In 1995, he began working at the People's Bank of China. In 2003, he joined the research institute of Everbright Securities as Chief Economist. In May 2007, he moved to China Merchants Securities as Chief Economist. In December 2023, China Merchants Securities was renamed as SDIC Securities, and he continued to hold this position until his resignation in November 2025.
