Leong Chen Lin Encourages Students: Mathematics is the Key to AI

(Miri, 27th) — Kapitan Leong Chen Lin, Chairman of the Miri Kaying Five Clans Association, emphasized that mathematics is the key to future technology, and the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) further highlights the importance of learning mathematics.
He made these remarks during his speech at the opening ceremony of the “39th National KLSCU Youth Primary School Mathematics Gold Cup Competition 2025” Miri district round, held this morning at Miri Chung Hua School.
This competition is organized under the auspices of the Federation of Kaying Associations Malaysia, hosted by KLSCU Youth Malaysia, with the collaboration of 28 affiliates nationwide, and will be held simultaneously across 26 districts on September 27.
Reflecting on his own upbringing, Leong Chen Lin shared that during his primary school days, computers were just entering households. His father’s company was equipped with a computer, which still used a dial-up modem that emitted a “dee-dee-dee” sound when starting up. He began learning programming in secondary school, majored in Computer Science at university, and deeply experienced the rapid advancement of technology.
Subsequently, he worked in the UK, Hong Kong, and Singapore, and was often sent on business trips to France, Italy, and Switzerland, witnessing firsthand the swift progress of computers and networking technology that has driven global transformation.
“With the rise of YouTube and online resources, lifelong learning has become possible. In recent years, the development of AI has brought tremendous shock to the world.”
He gave an example: earlier this year, he tried using AI to write a simple program and completed the task within minutes, feeling firsthand how AI has thoroughly changed the way we work.
He reiterated that future generations must master AI, and mathematics is the essential course to enter this realm. “Whether it’s machine learning, large language models, or even more powerful agents of the future, all are rooted in mathematics.”
Leong Chen Lin also pointed out that primary students in China have already started to use AI to complete assignments, and some teachers use AI to detect whether students have relied on it for writing essays or reports. This shows that AI’s impact is everywhere.
He stated that for every participant today, the meaning of learning mathematics goes beyond textbooks—it determines whether you can master AI and future technologies. He hopes everyone will cherish the opportunity to learn and treat mathematics as a cornerstone for the future.
He also thanked the organizers, the committee, principals, teachers, and parents for their dedication, enabling students to unleash their potential through competition.
Leong Chen Lin stated that the KLSCU Youth Mathematics Gold Cup is not only a competition of knowledge but also a platform to develop thinking skills and shape future leaders. He hopes the event will continue to thrive and become an important stage for primary school students nationwide to showcase their abilities and broaden their horizons.
