(Bandar Seri Begawan, 18th) The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), in conjunction with several other departments, conducted a series of inspections as part of an anti-drug abuse and trafficking operation in Belait District, arresting nine suspects aged between 23 and 74.
This arrest operation, codenamed 'Operation Starburn,' was carried out on December 11th, targeting multiple locations suspected of drug activities. Earlier, on December 9th, the NCB had also investigated three suspects from the Royal Brunei Police Force, one of whom was linked to this operation.
During the operation, the NCB seized two types of controlled substances—1.90 grams of methamphetamine and 6.09 grams of ketamine—as well as drug consumption equipment.
In a separate case, one suspect was detained at the Sungai Tujoh Control Post for allegedly smuggling drugs into the country and is being investigated under Section 5 of Chapter 27 of the Misuse of Drugs Act, which pertains to the smuggling of controlled substances in Brunei.
Meanwhile, two individuals arrested during the operation were brought to court for previous violations of Section 6(b) of the Misuse of Drugs Act (involving drug use). They were sentenced to three years and three months and three years and six months of imprisonment respectively.
The NCB stated that 'Operation Starburn' is part of its continued efforts to combat drug abuse and trafficking, particularly in the Belait District, which has become a hotspot for drug-related crimes.
This operation was conducted in collaboration with six agencies, including the Royal Brunei Police Force and Royal Customs Department. Measures included enhanced checks at the Sungai Tujoh entry post, setting up roadblocks at Kampong Mumong and the National Highway, and inspections along the Belait River.
