(US/Myanmar, 3rd) The United States has called on Myanmar to immediately release ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

According to AFP, a US State Department spokesperson said on Friday (May 1): "We continue to urge the authorities to immediately and unconditionally release Aung San Suu Kyi."

He said: "Given ongoing reports regarding Aung San Suu Kyi’s poor health, we urge the Myanmar regime to ensure that she receives appropriate medical care."

A member of Aung San Suu Kyi's legal team told Reuters that on the evening of April 30, Aung San Suu Kyi had been transferred to house arrest and is currently in Naypyidaw. Her legal team plans to meet with her on Sunday.

On April 17th, Myanmar’s President Min Aung Hlaing announced a general amnesty in conjunction with the Burmese New Year, reducing Aung San Suu Kyi’s sentence by one-sixth. On April 30th, Min Aung Hlaing signed another pardon, reducing the prison terms of all inmates by another one-sixth. This means Aung San Suu Kyi’s sentence will be further shortened.

Although shifting Aung San Suu Kyi from imprisonment to house arrest is a rare concession from the ruling authorities, her family, human rights organizations, and analysts believe this is nothing more than a publicity stunt by Myanmar’s military to reshape its image and consolidate the legitimacy of its rule.
