Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Prak Sokhonn today begins a two-day official visit to Malaysia, during which he will co-chair the 3rd Malaysia-Cambodia Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation (JCBC) meeting, which is being resumed after a 20-year hiatus.
A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that this visit comes as Malaysia and Cambodia are set to mark the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2027, underscoring the countries' longstanding and enduring partnership.
The statement said that today, Prak Sokhonn will pay a courtesy call on Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar, during which both sides are expected to reaffirm the long-term friendly relations between Malaysia and Cambodia and exchange views on issues of mutual concern.
On Tuesday, Prak Sokhonn will co-chair the 3rd Malaysia-Cambodia Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation meeting in Kuala Lumpur with Foreign Minister Dato' Seri Mohamad Hasan.
The ministry said that this meeting is of great significance, as it marks the resumption of the joint commission meeting mechanism since the last session was held in Siem Reap in 2006. It reflects the renewed momentum in bilateral relations and both countries' shared commitment to expanding cooperation in various fields.
After the meeting, the two foreign ministers are expected to sign the Minutes of the 3rd Joint Commission meeting, outlining the main outcomes of the session and reiterating Malaysia and Cambodia's commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation.
In 2025, Malaysia-Cambodia bilateral trade performed strongly, with total trade rising year-on-year by 27.4% to 5 billion ringgit (USD 1.17 billion). Of this, Malaysia's exports to Cambodia were worth 4.13 billion ringgit (USD 970 million), while imports reached 880 million ringgit (USD 200 million).
As of 2024, Malaysia's cumulative investment in Cambodia has reached USD 3.2 billion (about 13.07 billion ringgit), involving 162 registered projects, making Malaysia the third largest foreign investor in Cambodia.
