U.S. President Donald Trump stated that China has agreed to purchase 200 Boeing aircraft, a deal worth tens of billions of dollars, marking China’s first purchase of American-made commercial planes in nearly a decade. However, Boeing’s stock sharply fell by nearly 5% on the 14th.

The details of China’s Boeing purchase, including the delivery timeline and specific models, have yet to be announced, and the order volume is much lower than the previously rumored 500 planes.

In an interview with Fox News on the 14th, Trump said that China has agreed to order 200 "large" Boeing jets. “Boeing originally wanted 150, but they got 200.” Trump did not reveal which models are included in these 200 jets. Previously, there were expectations that Chinese airlines might purchase as many as 500 737 Max and wide-body aircraft.

After the news broke, Boeing’s stock slumped by as much as 5.4% intraday on the 14th and closed down 4.73% at $229.21 per share.

A Boeing spokesperson declined to comment.

The last time China ordered jets from Boeing was in 2017. Since 2018, European Airbus deliveries in China have outpaced Boeing’s.

In the past, Beijing has typically made large plane purchases from both Boeing and its rival Airbus, then distributed the aircraft to state-owned airlines.
