[Xi-Trump Summit] Seeking Breakthroughs in Trade, Taiwan Strait Becomes Sensitive Focal Point

Published at May 15, 2026 10:23 am
During the final meeting of the summit between U.S. President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping on the 14th, Trump will seek to achieve substantive results in the economic and trade fields. However, the summit is overshadowed by Xi Jinping's unusually tough warning on the Taiwan Strait issue.

According to AFP, Trump hopes to reach business agreements in agriculture, aviation, and artificial intelligence (AI), while also seeking progress on geopolitical issues such as the war in the Middle East.

Trump called Xi Jinping a "great leader" and a "friend," but so far, Xi Jinping's response to Trump's goodwill gestures has been relatively low-key.

Although both sides exchanged handshakes and held a grand ceremony the previous day, Xi Jinping issued a direct warning on the sensitive Taiwan Strait issue, pointing out that if not handled properly, it could lead China and the U.S. towards "conflict," casting a shadow over the summit.

● Trump: China Will Not Provide Military Aid to Iran

On the 14th, Trump did not comment on the Taiwan-related issues to reporters, but U.S. Treasury Secretary Bensant told financial media CNBC that the President would provide further details "in the coming days."

However, Trump addressed another key issue—the Iran war. In an exclusive interview with Fox News, he stated that Xi Jinping had assured him that China would not provide military assistance to Tehran.

Trump said, "Xi Jinping said he would not provide military equipment...and he said it very emphatically," also adding that Xi Jinping hopes to keep the Strait of Hormuz open to facilitate the shipping of oil and other key materials.

● Trump: Xi Jinping Mentioned America May Be in Decline

Trump also responded to Xi Jinping’s mention of the "Thucydides Trap" theory—a political theory which suggests that the risk of war increases when a rising power rivals an established one. Xi Jinping stated that China and the U.S. can "transcend" this risk.

In a social media post in the early morning of the 15th, Trump said Xi Jinping "very elegantly described America as a country that may be in decline."

Trump explained that Xi was not referring to the United States under his administration, claiming instead that the country is undergoing an "amazing revival," and was actually referring to the U.S. under President Biden.

He posted on social media: "Two years ago, we really were a country in decline. Today, the United States is the hottest country in the world. I hope our relationship with China will be stronger and better than ever!"

Trump added that Xi Jinping had "congratulated me on the many great successes I have achieved in various respects."
