(Miri, 25th) Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, Deputy Minister of Tourism of Sarawak, emphasized that diabetes and obesity have become one of the most severe public health challenges of our time, and all sectors need to join hands to take action and address it together.

He pointed out that according to the "2023 National Health and Morbidity Survey" (NHMS) data, the diabetes prevalence rate in Sarawak has reached 16.8%, with one in every six adults affected, and 28% of adults are obese, and this proportion is still rising.

Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew made these remarks during his speech at the closing ceremony of the 2024 International Diabetes and Obesity Conference held at the Pullman Hotel in Miri this morning.

He stated that these statistics are alarming, urging all sectors of society to adopt a multi-pronged approach.

He stated that the Sarawak government has taken a series of measures to address diabetes and obesity: first, "raising public awareness and education" through community activities, public health campaigns, and similar conferences to promote the importance of healthy lifestyles and early disease prevention; second, "enhancing medical services," focusing on improving healthcare services in remote areas to ensure that every Sarawakian can access the necessary medical resources and support; third, "encouraging an active lifestyle," combining health with tourism and community activities to motivate Sarawak residents and tourists to engage in more healthy and balanced lifestyles.

He said that the conference, organized by the Miri Regional Branch of the Malaysian Diabetes Association, attracted experts and scholars from Malaysia, ASEAN, and around the world to discuss solutions to the diabetes and obesity issue.

Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew expressed gratitude to the organizers, the Ministry of Health, pharmaceutical sponsors, and all participants, affirming the conference's achievements in knowledge exchange and collaboration.

"The discussions and insights from this conference will serve as critical catalysts for promoting health changes. Whether in research, medical care, or policy-making, your efforts will bring tangible changes for diabetes and obesity patients and high-risk groups."

Speaking about Miri, Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew expressed hope that participants could experience Sarawak's hospitality and rich natural and cultural charm besides the conference. He encouraged everyone to continue focusing on Sarawak's health and tourism development to promote regional progress together.

Finally, Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew officially announced the closure of the 2024 International Diabetes and Obesity Conference and wished all attendees a safe journey home. He called for everyone to work together towards a healthier future and looked forward to meeting again in Sarawak in the future.
