(Bandar Seri Begawan, 7th) During an inspection operation in Kampong Tamoi, the Labor Department's enforcement unit uncovered multiple violations.
Enforcement officers identified seven violations of the Employment Act, including employers failing to pay overtime wages, provide rest days, grant leave on public holidays, and compensate for work done during public holidays.
Other violations included breaching the terms stipulated in work permits. A foreign worker employed as a grass cutter was found engaging in garbage collection work.
Enforcement officers will conduct further investigations into violations of Chapter 278 of the Employment Act. If found guilty, employers may face fines of up to $1,000 for each offense. Failure to pay the fines may result in the employers being taken to court.
Participating in this action were also the Royal Brunei Police Force, the Immigration and National Registration Department, the Royal Customs Department, the Internal Security Department, the Brunei-Muara District Office, and the Narcotics Control Bureau.
During this operation, the Customs Department also recorded five incidents of arrests under Chapter 146 of the Excise Order 2006 due to possession of contraband.
Meanwhile, the Narcotics Control Bureau arrested two individuals for drug abuse.
The Labor Department reminds employers to ensure compliance with the provisions of the Employment Act, including the payment of overtime wages, weekly rest days, provision of public holidays, payment for medically certified sick leave, providing clean accommodation for workers, and ensuring workers fulfill their duties accordingly.
