(Borneo Bulletin, Bandar Seri Begawan, 24th) – To promote traditional Chinese culture and let young children experience the unique charm of traditional festivals, Brunei Chinese School Kindergarten successfully held a “Fragrant Rice Dumplings Welcoming Dragon Boat Festival · Joyful Children Celebrating the Festive Day” event on June 16.
This event blended culture, fun, and teamwork. Kindergarteners immersed themselves in the strong atmosphere of the Dragon Boat Festival through zongzi wrapping demonstrations, folk custom explanations, creative handicrafts and fun games, reaping growth and happiness through hands-on participation.
The activity began with teachers explaining the origins of the Dragon Boat Festival with vivid stories and pictures—from the story of Qu Yuan leaping into the river, to traditional customs like hanging mugwort, wearing sachets, and dragon boat racing. Afterwards, the teachers brought out glutinous rice, red dates, bamboo leaves and other ingredients, introducing the materials for making zongzi one by one.
The much-anticipated “zongzi wrapping demonstration” segment then kicked off in full swing. The teachers skillfully folded the leaves, filled in the glutinous rice, wrapped, and tied them up, quickly shaping angular, perfect zongzi. The children gathered around the table, eager to try; under the teachers’ guidance, they carefully attempted to wrap zongzi themselves. Though their movements were immature, each child was fully focused, filling the air with laughter and joy.

That day, a special “Dragon Boat Festival Creative Handicraft Workshop” was also set up. Children used colored paper, silk thread and more to make zongzi ornaments and dragon boat models, each whimsical creation carrying their beautiful wishes for the festival.
On site, the “Dragon Boat Race” and fun games brought the activity to its climax. In the “Dragon Boat Race”, the children transformed into “little dragons”, holding high the dragon head prop and swiftly weaving through a “dragon body” made of connected hula hoops, energetically “rowing” accompanied by thunderous cheering; during “zongzi transporters”, the kids raced to deliver “zongzi” to the end basket, returning after a high-five relay; and in “Perfect Zongzi Hits”, the children aimed and threw at the zongzi target, cheering ecstatically every time they landed a hit.
This celebration activity deeply integrated traditional culture with interactive gaming, not only letting children feel the festive atmosphere of the Dragon Boat Festival, but also sowing the seeds of Chinese culture inheritance in their hearts. The school hopes that through such activities close to children’s daily lives, kids will develop a love for Chinese culture from a young age, becoming its inheritors and promoters.
