Taiwan President Lai Ching-te said that the opposition is embracing Chinese President Xi Jinping. In response, the opposition Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) on the 29th criticized Lai Ching-te for spreading rumors, giving him 24 hours to apologize or face legal action.
Lai Ching-te's interview on SET News's "Talk Era Figures" program aired on the evening of the 28th. Regarding the opposition's proposal to impeach Lai Ching-te, he said: “I find it baffling that the Kuomintang and TPP opposition alliance would, for example, openly praise Putin as not being a dictator and then also embrace Xi Jinping. (Interviewer: Even went to pay respects to Wu Shi.) Yet they want to impeach a democratically elected president of Taiwan. I think society can judge for itself.”
On the 29th, TPP chairman Huang Kuo-chang responded at a press conference, accusing Lai Ching-te of being addicted to spreading rumors and said: “You have 24 hours to sincerely apologize, or the TPP will go to court tomorrow to seek compensation.”
TPP spokesperson Zhang Tong stated that Lai Ching-te has until 10:30 a.m. on the 30th to apologize; otherwise, the TPP will file a lawsuit and seek damages.
Huang Kuo-chang questioned Lai Ching-te: “When did the TPP ever praise Putin? When did the TPP ever embrace Xi Jinping?”
