Trump: US-Ukraine Talks Show Progress But Thorny Issues Remain Unresolved

Published at Dec 29, 2025 03:39 pm
US President Trump and Ukrainian President Zelensky held a joint press conference following their meeting on the 28th, both giving high praise to the talks.

Although both sides claimed the talks made "great progress," there is still no sign of an end to the Russia-Ukraine war.

That afternoon, Trump held a meeting with Ukrainian President Zelensky at Mar-a-Lago in Florida. Before the meeting, Trump had a phone call with Russian President Putin.

Trump stated that the meeting was "very good," and that both sides are "getting closer to reaching an agreement, perhaps very close already."

He pointed out that "about 95%" of Ukraine's security guarantees have been agreed upon, but "one or two very thorny issues" remain unresolved.

When asked what the most difficult issues are, Trump responded that it is the issue of territory.

Trump said that Ukraine "would do best to reach an agreement now," that Ukrainians are "very brave... and have also caused tremendous destruction," and that "now is the time to end" this conflict.

Zelensky thanked Trump for hosting a "great meeting," saying he discussed all aspects of the peace framework with Trump, and that 90% consensus had been reached on the 20-point peace plan.

Regarding Ukraine's security guarantees, Zelensky said that both sides had reached "100% consensus," calling this a "key milestone for lasting peace." However, he also noted that both teams will continue working to "finalize all discussion items."

Zelensky pointed out that Ukraine's position on the Donbas issue is "very clear," and different from Russia's stance.
