Russian President Putin announced on the 8th that the "Victory Day Ceasefire" took effect at midnight Moscow time (5 am Malaysian time).
Putin had earlier decided to implement a 3-day ceasefire from midnight on May 8th to midnight on May 11th during the "celebration of the 80th anniversary of the Great Patriotic War Victory of the Soviet Union." During this period, all military actions will cease.
Before the ceasefire took effect, Ukraine intensified its offensive against Russia. The Russian Ministry of Defense stated on the 7th that the Russian military air defense system repelled a large-scale Ukrainian attack, shooting down 2 HIMARS rockets, more than 500 drones, 5 long-range Neptune missiles, and 6 JDAM precision-guided aerial bombs.
Additionally, Ukrainian President Zelensky reiterated a few hours before the ceasefire that a comprehensive, unconditional ceasefire of at least 30 days should be achieved to provide a basis for genuine diplomatic efforts.
He stated that Ukraine refuses to accept the 3-day ceasefire ordered by Putin to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the World War II victory but is ready for a comprehensive ceasefire.
Kremlin spokesperson Peskov stated that Putin supports a long-term ceasefire agreement with Ukraine, but a series of detailed issues must be resolved first.
