The Tokyo police stated on the 8th that they have charged a man with attempted murder for a knife attack that occurred on the subway during rush hour the previous day.
According to reports, 2 people were injured in the incident.
A police spokesperson told AFP that 43-year-old Yoshitaka Toda was arrested at Tōdaimae Station in the capital on the evening of the 7th on suspicion of attacking a man in his 20s.
The spokesperson noted that the suspect had the "intent to kill, and injured the victim by hacking at his head and other body parts with a knife-like object he was carrying."
Local Japanese media reported that at around 7 p.m. local time on the 7th, police received reports of a man brandishing a knife on the platform of Tōdaimae Station on the Tokyo Metro Namboku Line. The Tokyo Metro Namboku Line was subsequently suspended.
The report stated that Toda allegedly attacked the victim multiple times. First on the station platform, then the victim ran into a subway carriage, and Toda pursued him and hacked at his head several times. Other passengers subdued Toda.
The report noted that it is believed Toda and the victim did not know each other, and another passenger who helped subdue the attacker was cut on the hand.
