On May 1st, large-scale May Day celebrations and rallies were held across Indonesia. Workers, union members, and the public gathered at Jakarta’s Independence Square to participate in International Labor Day events. A band performed on stage, creating a lively atmosphere.
According to reports by China News Service, the Indonesian Trade Union Confederation estimated this year’s Jakarta Labor Day rally would draw around 100,000 people. In addition to the capital, related events took place simultaneously in all 38 provinces and over 350 cities nationwide.
Indonesian President Prabowo arrived at the venue by car, waving to workers along the way. In his speech, he stated that the government would introduce several measures in response to workers’ demands regarding income, housing, and childcare.
Adjustment of Ride-Hailing Motorcycle Platform Commission
Regarding the commission issue on ride-hailing motorcycle platforms, Prabowo announced he had signed a relevant presidential regulation stipulating that the maximum commission rate for platform companies would be lowered to 8%, with drivers receiving at least 92% of incomes. Previously, some platforms took about 20% in commissions.
As for housing, Prabowo stated the government plans to build at least one million homes this year, prioritizing locations near industrial parks to shorten workers’ commuting times. The new residential areas will be equipped with schools, hospitals, and childcare centers, as well as planned public transport systems like buses and light rail.
Providing Lower-Cost Childcare Services for Workers’ Children
Furthermore, the government will fast-track the development of childcare facilities for workers’ families to offer lower-cost childcare services.
Prabowo stated that workers support their families through hard work and deserve respect, and the government will continue to improve livelihoods and safeguard the rights of the broader labor force.
