Myanmar Government Announces Large-Scale Sentence Reductions; Aung San Suu Kyi’s Prison Term Further Shortened

On the 30th, Myanmar's new President Min Aung Hlaing halved the sentences of all prisoners. According to a source close to former State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, this means that Suu Kyi's prison term will be further shortened.

Myanmar usually issues amnesties for all prisoners every year on Independence Day in January and the Myanmar New Year in April.

The Myanmar government had already pardoned over 4,500 prisoners last week and commuted Aung San Suu Kyi's sentence.

However, a source from the now-dissolved National League for Democracy (NLD) told AFP: "We still don't know exactly how many years she has left to serve."

The office of President Min Aung Hlaing issued a statement on Thursday, announcing that, to celebrate the public holiday on April 30th, "the remaining sentences of all prisoners will be halved."

The statement did not mention the names of any prisoners, but an NLD source revealed that Aung San Suu Kyi's "remaining sentence will also be halved." However, it remains unclear how much of Aung San Suu Kyi's sentence, handed down under Myanmar’s opaque judicial system, has already been served.

Aung San Suu Kyi will turn 81 in June this year. Since being detained after being overthrown in a military coup five years ago, the outside world has known almost nothing about her situation. There have been occasional rumors that her health has deteriorated, or that she may have already passed away.

However, the military has repeatedly denied such rumors, emphasizing that Aung San Suu Kyi is in good health, but has not provided details or proof.
