Miri Transport Company to Officially Launch Rural Bus Service on March 8

(Miri, March 7) – Miri Transport Company (MTC) has announced that it will officially launch its rural bus service on March 8, 2025 (Saturday). This initiative aims to provide safe, convenient, and affordable public transportation for residents. The company also welcomes passenger feedback to further optimize service quality.

At a press conference this morning, MTC General Manager Alice Kwan Yat Lee, together with Company Secretary Wong Chi Hua, Board Chairman Lee Khoi Yun, Treasurer Lau Ping Hua, Director KPT Sim Yam Leong, and Director Lester Tan, jointly announced this initiative.

According to Alice Kwan, the rural bus service has been approved by the Sarawak Ministry of Transport (MOTS) and the  Land Public Transport Committee (LPKP ). A total of 10 buses will be deployed across the following four main routes: Bekenu, Batu Niah, Bakong, Lapok, and Long Lama.

Enhancing Rural Connectivity & Economic Growth

Alice Kwan emphasized that this new service will improve rural residents' mobility, reduce the urban-rural gap, and support economic activities such as agricultural transportation and tourism development. It will also enhance social services by enabling residents to easily travel to urban areas for government-related matters, work, education, and healthcare.

She added that the initiative also aims to boost economic growth, reduce poverty, create job opportunities, and improve infrastructure and public services in both urban and rural areas.

Board Chairman Lee Khoi Yun reaffirmed MTC’s commitment to strengthening rural transportation networks and ensuring accessible public transport for all. He encouraged residents to use the service and provide feedback to help improve operational efficiency.

To promote the new service, MTC plans to meet with local representatives and community leaders to introduce the benefits and address public inquiries regarding routes, schedules, and fares.

Bus Routes & Timetable

The bus terminal is located at Wisma Pelita in Miri city center, with the following routes and schedules:

Route 88: Bekenu, Pekan Niah (via Pan Borneo Highway). Departure times: 07:00 and 09:00. Return times: 13:00 and 15:00.

Route 89: Bakong, Lapok, Long Lama. Departure time: 07:30. Return time: 14:00.

Route 98: Pekan Bekenu, Pekan Niah (via Coastal Road). Departure times: 07:00 and 13:00. Return times: 09:00 and 15:00.

Route 99: Bekenu, Pekan Bekenu (via Pan Borneo Highway). Departure time: 08:00. Return time: 14:00.

Passengers can board at designated bus stops and purchase tickets directly from the driver. Ticket prices range from RM5 to RM27, depending on the destination. Children under 12 pay half-price, while senior citizens (with ID) enjoy a 50% discount.

Additionally, MTC provides cargo transport services along these routes, with options to transfer shipments to Miri and further to Bintulu, Sibu, or Kuching.
