Morsjaya Market Customer Day: City Council Receives 22 Complaints

(Miri, 7th) The Miri City Council held a customer day event today at the Morsjaya Market in Miri and received 22 citizen complaints.

During the press conference after the customer day, Mayor YB Adam Yii said the submissions included 2 complaints to the engineering department, 8 public health complaints, 4 public cleanliness and maintenance complaints, 1 by the enforcement unit, 3 landscape section complaints, and 4 other department complaints.

He said the Miri City Council would place rolling garbage bins at specified locations and, to effectively monitor the littering situation, the council would install CCTVs, put up notice boards, or assign personnel for supervision. The council also frequently updates garbage cleanup information on the official Facebook page, so he hopes the public will cooperate fully and abide by the law to jointly maintain Miri's cleanliness.

“If the public sees littering, they shouldn’t immediately post it on social media. They should report it through the proper channels, such as during the city council's customer day, directly Whatsapp the councilors, or use the hotline of the Miri Smart City Command Centre.”

He pointed out that cleaning the drains in each area is primarily the contractor's job. However, due to their failure to adhere to contracts and the lack of supervision by city council officials, blockages occur frequently. Therefore, the council is committed to ensuring that contractors and personnel from relevant units fulfill their responsibilities.

Adam Yii also mentioned that due to the Morsjaya Market being set on fire by a mentally ill person not long ago, the roof and power supply were affected. However, the council has initiated the tender process for repair and upgrading works for the market and hopes the work can start soon to resolve the roof and power supply issues.

“Abandoned vehicles are also a serious issue, as dumping vehicles roadside causes problems, so the city council is committed to resolving these issues.”

He also said that in the future, the Miri City Council would fully adopt online methods like Whatsapp or email to issue assessment notices and use online payment methods for assessment taxes. Currently, 65% of tax notices in Miri are issued online, and those who haven't received them can print them at UTC.
