(Philippines, 15th) The Philippines and Japan conducted a maritime cooperation exercise in the West Philippine Sea on Saturday, June 14, nearly a year after the two countries first held such an exercise.
This exercise coincides with the Japanese parliament's passage of the 'Reciprocal Access Agreement,' a move seen as enhancing defense cooperation between the two countries.
Members of the media, including ABS-CBN News, boarded the newly commissioned missile frigate 'BRP Miguel Malvar,' purchased from South Korea.
The Japanese destroyer 'JS Takanami' also participated in the exercise.
The two countries first conducted an anti-surface warfare drill on their respective ships, focusing on the training for destroying surface vessels.
During the exercise, two vessels of the People's Liberation Army Navy appeared, with the hull numbers 569 and 161, respectively.
These Chinese vessels only followed the Philippine-Japanese fleet within the exercise area without showing any force.
Around 10 a.m., both sides proceeded with a deck landing exercise, with a Philippine Navy helicopter taking off from the 'BRP Miguel Malvar' and landing in the hangar of 'JS Takanami'.
The Philippine Navy helicopter landed twice on the Japanese destroyer.
They then conducted a formation tactical exercise, which, according to the Philippine Army, aimed to enhance the interoperability and coordination among the participating naval vessels through tactical maneuvers.
The exercise fleet formed a formation 20 nautical miles northwest of Cabra Island, moving at speeds between 12 to 20 knots.
The exercise content included unit tactical signals, command and control, and other operational procedures.
