(Kuala Lumpur, 7th) A viral video circulating on social media has sparked heated debate, showing a group of cyclists getting into a fierce dispute with a bus driver on the highway. The video, uploaded by one of the cyclists, alleges that during their ride, the bus driver “attempted to crash into” them, even though they were already riding on the far left lane and not obstructing other vehicles.

From the footage, it can be seen that both parties stopped at the roadside and got into a heated argument. A group of cyclists gathered in front of the bus, confronting the driver, and some even suggested referring the matter to the Road Transport Department (JPJ) to determine who was in the right.
However, once the video was released, it drew a flood of netizen comments and criticism, mainly focusing on "whether the cyclists were violating traffic laws."
Some netizens commented:
  • "Bicycles are strictly forbidden on highways!"
  • "Fortunately it was an ordinary driver, had it been someone more emotionally unstable, the consequences could have been disastrous."
  • "You were clearly breaking the rules, yet you blame others?"
  • "How are you any different from those teens riding modified bicycles?"

According to Section 67 of the Malaysian Road Transport Act 1987 (Akta Pengangkutan Jalan 1987), bicycles are only allowed on designated sections of the road, and are not permitted to be ridden on expressways unless there is a dedicated bicycle lane or clear signage allowing their use.
Additionally, the 1987 Road Transport (Vehicles) (Construction and Use) Rules state that highways are mainly meant for motorcycles, cars, and heavy vehicles. Bicycles, due to their slow speed and lack of safety features, pose a significant danger to both themselves and other road users if they appear on high-speed roads.
