(Miri, 10th) The Sarawak Badminton Association (SBA) will be organizing a statewide selection tournament to identify and nurture outstanding players, recommending them to the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), paving the way for Sarawak athletes to fight for opportunities to represent the nation on the international stage.
SBA Secretary Datuk Wan Khalid Wan Mohammad pointed out that under the new leadership, SBA is the only recognized badminton governing body in Sarawak. All players in the state fall under the association's jurisdiction, and through affiliate memberships, SBA closely collaborates with BAM to ensure that young players have a clear pathway to progression.
In an interview during a meet-and-greet with young players yesterday at the Tung Sports Badminton Hall in Miri, he said that as an affiliate of BAM, their duty is to send Sarawak’s best players to the national team for further training. New talents always have the chance to be discovered and cultivated, and one day, represent Sarawak and even Malaysia in competitions.
He said that as long as potential is shown, young players will have the opportunity to qualify for international competitions. "I have seen the standard of players in Miri—they are excellent. With hard work, there is no reason they can’t make it into the national team and bring glory to the country."
Wan Khalid also emphasized that regardless of one’s badminton skills, education must be given equal importance, encouraging players that academics are essential and should never be neglected. Excellence is required both in studies and on the badminton court. Agile thinking will help you respond better on court.
He revealed that SBA will continue to monitor players’ performance through ranking tournaments and zonal competitions in areas such as Kuching, Sibu, and Miri, ensuring that selections are based on merit.
He said that with rigorous training in Sarawak, they will send the most outstanding players onto the national stage. In addition, SBA is also looking for sponsors to provide quality equipment and welfare support for the players.
He added that they hope to provide the best possible conditions for the players, including suitable gear and security, enabling them to perform at their best.
He encouraged young players to engage in badminton with passion and dedication, and by competing with the right spirit, great results will naturally follow.
