(Hanoi, 7th) – As the World Cup enters the knockout stage, Vietnamese police have intensified their crackdown on illegal gambling, announcing the arrest of 85 suspects involved in two major betting syndicates with cumulative amounts of around 133 million US dollars.
According to a police announcement on Tuesday, these two major gambling groups have been operating since October last year, with organized structure and clear hierarchies, and the amount of illegal transactions is estimated to reach 133 million US dollars.
Police stated that in late June of this year they launched raids on the two major gambling syndicates, successfully dismantling the networks and arresting 85 people involved.
Investigations revealed that the heads of these groups obtained “master agent” online betting accounts from Cambodia, then split the accounts into multiple sub-agent and member accounts, distributing them to online gamblers for illegal betting activities.
Vietnam bans online gambling, but illegal gambling activities persist, with police increasing enforcement especially during major international sporting events.
The Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security stated last week that in the 20 days since the World Cup began, police nationwide have dismantled 73 gambling dens, arrested 346 people suspected of illegal gambling and betting, and the amounts involved reached several trillion Vietnamese Dong, equivalent to hundreds of millions of US dollars.
The 2026 World Cup will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with the final to be held on July 19 at the MetLife Stadium in the US. FIFA President Gianni Infantino stated that US President Trump will attend the final and present the World Cup trophy to the champion team.
