Dong Zong: Understanding Society's High Expectations for Professionalism, but Courage to Admit Mistakes and Reflect Should Also Be Recognized

Dong Zong stated that the recent incident of the incorrect placement of the national flag illustration in the SPM results analysis report highlights the need for scrutiny of AI-generated content and the importance of media content quality control.

Dong Zong pointed out that similar oversights have caused public debate, from Sin Chew Daily and Kwong Wah Yit Poh to the Ministry of Education.

“Facing consecutive errors, we understand society's expectation that public departments and media must exhibit higher professionalism and prudence.”

“However, after any mistake occurs, if one can courageously admit it, promptly correct it, review the system, and prevent recurrence, it also reflects a responsible and progressive attitude.”

Dong Zong calls for rational insights from all parties to learn from the incident and move towards more mature public discussions.

In a statement on Friday (April 25th), Dong Zong mentioned that whether it is the Ministry of Education or media organizations, these incidents of misplacing the national flag illustration are professional oversights. Although they are not intentional, they are indeed accountable. Mistakes were corrected and apologies offered promptly, with a willingness to bear the consequences without evading responsibility or shifting focus.

“This type of attitude that acknowledges mistakes, self-reflects, and courageously makes amends is commendable.”

Dong Zong believes that under the heavy workload and time constraints, it is inevitable for publishing and printing work to have human errors, which are unintentional oversights.

“The relevant parties must learn from this in the future, review internal processes, and establish manual review mechanisms, avoiding complete reliance on AI-generated materials to prevent similar events from recurring.”

The statement indicates that while no error can avoid accountability and consequences, society should view similar events rationally, avoiding unnecessary politicization or the stoking of populism.

“When public sentiment dictates, that is populism; when law and rationality are the basis, that aligns with democratic spirit. Only by not succumbing to populist fervor and provocative rhetoric can our society deeply reflect on the aforementioned incidents and seriously view them as learning opportunities beneficial to social progress.”
