(Miri, 19th) — A local man was arrested by police last Friday night for allegedly trespassing into a telecommunication substation located alongside the Niah Stone Hill Miri-Bintulu highway.
According to reports, the incident occurred at around 8pm on May 16, when the suspect allegedly cut open the wire fence and unlawfully entered the restricted facility area.
Police stated that a staff member who arrived for a routine inspection found someone had broken in, confronted the suspect on the spot, and successfully subdued him before handing him over to the police.
Police later conducted a check and seized a large bolt cutter and a samurai sword, both believed to be used by the suspect to commit the crime.
A motorcycle, believed to have been used by the suspect, was also impounded by the police.
The man is currently being remanded for three days until May 20 to assist further investigation.
The case is being investigated under Section 447 of the Penal Code (criminal trespass). If convicted, the offender can be sentenced to up to 6 months in prison, fined RM3,000, or both.
The police commended the security personnel and onsite staff for their swift action, stating that their timely response not only successfully prevented a potential crime but also ensured the suspect was apprehended before further incidents could occur.
