(Miri, 19th) Miri police have swiftly solved an armed robbery and carjacking case, successfully arresting a local man with multiple previous convictions and recovering the stolen Toyota Fortuner SUV.
This case occurred at around 9:15 am on the 17th of this month, in the vicinity of the roundabout near Miri Times Square. A woman and her child were waiting inside a white Toyota Fortuner when two unknown men suddenly broke into the vehicle, with one holding a knife to the child’s neck and the other threatening the woman with a knife.
The suspects then drove off with the SUV, abandoning the mother and child near Miri Park. The victims lost about RM600 in cash and an SUV, with total losses estimated at approximately RM176,000.
Miri District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Lee Bing Chiang stated that after receiving the report, police launched an investigation and, acting on intelligence, arrested a 50-year-old local man near Times Square that same afternoon.
Police investigations revealed that the suspect had multiple previous criminal records involving robbery, car theft, and drug-related cases. Police later also recovered the stolen Toyota Fortuner in the parking lot of a large supermarket in Miri.
The case is currently being investigated under Sections 395/397 of the Penal Code (armed gang robbery). The suspect has been remanded for six days starting May 18th, until May 24th, to assist further investigations and to pursue another accomplice who is still at large.
