KAPIT: Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi has hinted at the possibility of continuing his political career at the state level, saying he is interested in serving as a member of the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) should the opportunity arise.

The Works Minister, who has represented Kapit in Parliament for nearly 30 years, said the matter would ultimately depend on the party leadership.

“If there is an opportunity and permission from the party leadership, I would like to continue my political service at the state level.

“However, that depends very much on the party leadership,” he told reporters at the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) when asked about his political future today (May 9).

When asked if he had a specific state seat in mind, Nanta said it would likely be within the Kapit area.

“I heard there is a possibility of a new seat following the redelineation of state constituencies in the Kapit area,” he said.

Touching on his decision not to contest in the next general election, Nanta said he believed it was time to give younger leaders the opportunity to step forward.

“I feel that maybe the time has come for me to hand over to the younger people. We already have people prepared should they be needed,” he said.

Meanwhile, Nanta also shared updates on upcoming Gawai-related celebrations and cultural events in Kapit and Song.

He said the annual ‘Niti Daun’ celebration, which he described as a traditional Gawai procession involving various Dayak communities including the Iban, Bidayuh and Orang Ulu, would continue this year.

“We also have the Kapit Cultural Festival which we have been organising for many years. This time we are doing it again,” he said.
