Wang Yi Attends 'Group of Friends of Global Governance' Meeting, Advocates Greater Voice for Small Countries

(New York, 29th) Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs, attended the 'Group of Friends of Global Governance' meeting at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on the 28th. In his keynote speech, he proposed nine directions for reform to improve global governance, including enhancing the authority and capacity of the Security Council, increasing the voice of developing countries and the vast number of small and medium-sized countries, calling for the five permanent members to reduce confrontation, and opposing unilateral actions and sanctions that bypass the Security Council.

Foreign ministers from more than 60 countries, including Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Cuba, and Zimbabwe, attended the meeting.

According to China News Service, in his keynote speech, Wang Yi stated that last September, President Xi Jinping solemnly put forth the Global Governance Initiative, highlighting the five core concepts of sovereign equality, rule of law in international relations, multilateralism, people-centeredness, and action-oriented approach. The initiative has already received support and response from nearly 160 countries and international organizations. The 'Group of Friends of Global Governance' has been established successively in New York, Geneva, and Vienna, with membership now exceeding 60 countries.

Wang Yi emphasized that, to reform and improve global governance, China has proposed the following nine reform directions: First, promote UN reform and increase efficiency; second, enhance the authority and capability of the Security Council; third, update peacekeeping actions with the times; fourth, build international consensus to accelerate development; fifth, rectify the direction of international human rights governance; sixth, deepen economic and financial system reform; seventh, establish rules for artificial intelligence governance; eighth, strengthen governance of new frontiers such as cyberspace and outer space; ninth, promote civilizational exchanges to achieve inclusiveness and mutual learning.

The meeting issued a joint communiqué of the 'Group of Friends of Global Governance.'
