Female Cyclist Knocked Down and Killed by Dog; Owner Killed the Dog to Escape Responsibility

(Hebei, 29th) In Handan, Hebei, a woman surnamed Zhang was riding an electric two-wheeler to work when she was knocked down by a large dog that suddenly ran onto the road. Ms. Zhang sustained serious head injuries after falling to the ground and died despite rescue efforts, at the young age of 38. What is chilling is that the dog's owner, in order to evade responsibility, beat the dog to death and falsely claimed "the dog was not his, he was just passing by."

According to the Sing Tao Daily on the 28th, the incident happened in the early morning of July 20 last year. China Newsweek recently quoted Zhang's sister, who was present at the scene, recalling that the two sisters were riding electric scooters one after the other, traveling normally on the north side of the road when "the dog suddenly dashed over like crazy," and Ms. Zhang was knocked to the ground in an instant.

The family later learned that the dog was a Greyhound owned by a local villager named Shi. At the time of the accident, Shi was walking his dog on the accident section of the road without a leash. Initially, Shi admitted to being the owner, but just before the ambulance arrived, he flatly denied owning the dog.

● Dog beaten to death and thrown into an abandoned well

A few days later, Shi beat the dog to death on his own and threw it into an abandoned well in the village. With the help of others, Ms. Zhang's husband spent hours retrieving the dog from the well. Police eventually confirmed that Shi was the owner of the dog involved in the incident. CCTV footage also showed that Shi walked his dog almost every day, "never using a leash."

On August 13 last year, Handan police filed a case to investigate Ms. Zhang's death. Shi was summoned by police on suspicion of negligent homicide, and in September was released on bail pending trial. He has yet to receive any punishment. Authorities have organized multiple mediation sessions with the family, but Ms. Zhang's family refused to settle and demanded to hold Shi criminally accountable.

● Husband suddenly suffers brainstem hemorrhage and is hospitalized

Unfortunately, in December last year, after months of efforts for the case, Ms. Zhang's husband suffered a sudden brainstem hemorrhage and has been in a coma ever since. According to the family, Ms. Zhang used to earn money for the family working at a construction site, while her husband stayed home to take care of their three underage children, the youngest being only 8 years old. Now, the children can only be looked after by their grandparents, and the family has lost its source of income.
